The WNMU volleyball team caputred their first win of the 2007 season on Friday afternoon when they knocked off the University of Texas - Permian Basin. The Mustangs came out on top, three games to one: 30-29, 30-32, 30-21, 30-11.
Overall, the Mustangs played better in their second match of the season, hitting 41.7% in the fourth game. Outside hitters Tirzah Armenta (Phoenix, AZ/Central High School) (Phoenix, AZ) and Natali Murdock (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle High School) (Phoenix, AZ) combined for 37 of the team's 68 kills. Each only committed five hitting errors.
Courtney Heiser (Tempe, AZ/Marcos de Niza High School) (Tempe, AZ) tallied 53 assists and 12 digs in the win, but leading the defense was libero Jessica Lindgren (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola High School) (Albuquerque, NM). She posted 22 digs in her four games played.
Playing in only two games, freshman Alzie Auelua (Aiea, HI/Radford High School) (Aieau, HI) led the defense up front. She posted one solo dig and eight bock assists, leading the team. In total, the Mustangs tallied 15 blocks to the Falcons eight.
WNMU will face Grand Canyon University early Saturday morning. The first serve is at 8:00 a.m. The Mustang's last game of the tournament will be at 2:00 p.m. versus Winona State University.
